Daily Food Pattern Reference
The current U.S. Dietary Guidelines provide the following example for a 2,000-calorie eating pattern. This is a general reference because personal calorie needs depend on age, sex, height, weight, and physical activity.
- Protein foods: 3 to 4 servings
- Dairy or fortified alternatives: 3 servings
- Vegetables: 3 servings
- Fruits: 2 servings
- Whole grains: 2 to 4 servings
- Healthy fats: about 4 1/2 teaspoons
A protein-food serving can be 3 ounces of cooked meat, poultry, or seafood; 1 egg; 1/2 cup beans, peas, or lentils; 1 ounce nuts or seeds; 2 tablespoons nut or seed butter; or 3 ounces soy food.
